I recently had the pleasure of attending the Arizona Costume Institute Holilday Lucheon at the Phoenix Art Museum. The guest speaker was former Coucil of Fashioin Designers of America (CFDA) Executive Director and founder of New York Fashion Week Fern Mallis. Fern now hosts a conversation series at the 92nd Street Y entitled Fashion Icons w/ Fern Mallis, which has featured interviews with Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Tommy Hilfiger, Tom Ford, Michael Kors, Diane von Fursenberg, Marc Jacobs, Betsey Johnson, Vera Wang and Oscar de la Renta. She told us some really fun and interesting inside stories about these interviews and then had a book signing after. I felt such a personal connection with her as she told us about her professional journey. Her experiences were so similar to mine only in a much bigger way because she was in NY trying to scaffold a fashion industry there while I am only in AZ trying to do the same. My accomplishments are minute compared to hers, but it made me realize that no matter where you are or who you are, we are all human and we really all do experience life's ups and downs in similar ways on our journey to who we are supposed to become. I was able to share a moment with her as she was signing a book for me when I mentioned that I was the Regioal Director for Fashion Group International of Arizona and she is also an FGI member.
